Washing machine won't start? Begin with power and the door.

A washer that appears completely dead may have a simple power or door-latch issue. Check the outside of the appliance first; do not open panels or handle internal wiring.

1. Confirm the outlet and breaker

Check whether the outlet has power using another device you know works. Then look for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet that needs to be reset. Do not use an extension cord for a washing machine.

2. Close the door or lid firmly

Most washers will not begin a cycle until the lid or door lock engages. Remove fabric from the seal, close the door again, and wait a moment for the lock to click.

3. Check the controls

Some models have a control lock or require the Start button to be held briefly. Check your manual for that model's normal start sequence and any visible error code.

4. Get help for repeated failures

If power reaches the washer and the door closes correctly but the controls stay blank or the machine repeatedly trips a breaker, stop using it. A technician should inspect the appliance.
